I am both a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and a Registered Dietitian (RD) with over 20 years of experience treating eating disorders, exercise addiction and body image concerns. I practice from an Intuitive Eating and Health At Every Size® perspective and have worked at every level of care (in-patient, residential, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient) in eating disorder treatment, in both managerial and non-managerial roles.
I believe that language creates meaning in our lives to the extent that our problems can become totalizing and we begin to believe we are our problems. Problems with food, body image, and movement become “disordered” when they evolve into a singular expression of a person’s identity, masking the intricate threads that make us all unique, creative individuals. I am interested in collaborating with my clients to re-author the problematic stories that have glossed over their unique threads. I do this by encouraging the development of “preferred stories”, enhancing personal agency by exposing other invisibilized narratives and values and asking what are the effects of the stories we tell ourselves. I believe it is vitally important to expose our assumptions, values, beliefs and biases in order to move out of binary thinking.
I employ a variety of therapeutic techniques including but not limited to CBT, DBT, mindfulness and I am widely influenced by Narrative, Post-Modern theories. Additionally, I am a Level One Graduate in Sensorimotor Training and am a trauma informed therapist.
I have experience treating individuals across the lifespan–from children (ages 10 and up) to adults, couples and families. My passion is working with families, parents and children and helping them to restore balance, mutual respect and open dialogue in the family system. Additionally, I am passionate about the treatment of trauma using sensorimotor modalities involving body awareness and connection and find its practical applications tremendously useful in healing from an eating disorder. My intention is to provide a brave and inclusive space for all people, honoring ethnicity, race, gender and gender identity, sexual orientation, size, age, ability and religion.
I am paneled with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Pacific Source and Cigna (*effective 9/1/2019) and can bill out of network benefits. I am accepting new clients on a limited basis in Lake Oswego.
