Bio My practice centers those who are queer or questioning, have experienced trauma (both single event and complex), eating disorders, body image disturbances, gender dysphoria, those who struggle with anxiety/depression, and those are trying to figure their new season of life. Therapy is a vulnerable process based upon your desires, therefore I strive for all therapeutic decisions to be done collaboratively, consent driven, and with anti-oppressive frameworks at the forefront. I believe that you have the answers within you, we just may need to do work to uncover them. I utilize a technical eclecticism approach when working with clients, which means I employ a variety of techniques such as DBT, ACT, IFS, EMDR, and harm reduction. My counseling foundation is rooted in person centered, humanistic and feminist theories. I strive to create a collaborative and autonomous environment for my clients. Being a person who has experienced trauma, oppression, and the subsequent mental health issues that can arise from these issues can create feelings of not being safe in the world. While I acknowledge that individual therapy cannot fix systemic issues, I hope that the space we create together can create at least one pocket of safety for you.

Bio It often seems like finding a medical provider who sees beyond the surface and takes us seriously about our health concerns is nearly impossible. As a fat, queer woman, I have experienced this as a patient and do my best to see the person in front of me for who they are and address their issues to the best of my ability. We are experts in our own bodily experience, and we also need someone on the outside to support us in seeing and navigating our health challenges. I love to work with folks to find peace in their bodies and find health that is not based in unreasonable societal expectations. I take all of the insurance listed below in OR. Currently only take BCBS, out of network, and private pay in WA.

My therapy is secular and non-religious. I am dedicated to breaking down the stigma around mental health. I have developed a personal and profound appreciation for the unique qualities that each client I work with brings to their treatment and healing. I especially enjoy working with clients in cultivating body appreciation, and finding new ways to care for self on a deeper and more intimate level. We live in a society that floods us with negative messages as to how our bodies are wrong. I work with clients to decrease shame and guilt around the body, and to find safety and acceptance in taking up the personal space you have the right to comfortably occupy. I utilize the principles of Intuitive Eating and work from a Health at Every Size (HAES®) approach to provide you with support in finding peace with your body and with food. I strive to encourage you to trust your body and listen to hunger and fullness cues and assist you in rediscovering joy and satisfaction through celebrating body diversity, and rejecting diet culture, sizeism, and the "thin ideal."

Samantha Barr MA, LPC, NCC - Eating Disorder Care

Samantha Barr MA, LPC, NCC - Eating Disorder Care

Pronouns she/her

Credentials MA, LPC, NCC

Bio So, your relationship with food has brought you here, but maybe you’re unsure if what you consider some form of overeating warrants seeking professional help. You don't have to suffer from anorexia and/or bulimia to "deserve" treatment and support. People who are enduring binge and emotional eating are often blamed (by themselves and others) for their use of food. If this is you, you may believe you have no "will power" and your relationship with food/body is your "fault". You aren't yet aware there are reasons (always other than will power) that explain your experience with food/body. You are not to blame. My mission is to help you find relief, so that food is just food again—free of stress and shame. I specialize in the treatment of binge eating disorder, compulsive overeating, emotional overeating, eating addiction, and their related struggles, such as depression. To help you become fully present, and live a life not overshadowed by worry. I believe in harnessing your critical thinking skills to help you create positive change. I'll encourage you to keep asking "why" and questioning thoughts or values to determine for yourself what‘s important (instead of defaulting to what "should" be important). This authenticity and conviction translate to all other areas of life.
